Girl with the Arrow

arrowJenna Kamphaus (October 2010)

Kristen and JennaKristen and Jenna

I would like to take this opportunity to nominate my little, Jenna Kamphaus for the Girl with the Arrow - for the reason that there is no one more deserving. I would like to nominate Jenna not for the loss of her life, but for the lives that she touched and the legacy that she leaves behind.

On Tuesday, Sept 21, 2010 at 3:00am Jenna joined the angels in heaven. Her whole life she has struggled with her heart. On Monday, September 20, 2010 she became unconscious and was rushed to the emergency room. The doctors worked throughout the day to save her, unfortunately, her heart was just too weak.

It was nearly two years ago when this young woman walked into my life. I can still remember what she was wearing when I first met her at Muskie Preview. She was so friggin (a word that Jenna used ALL the time) adorable! Right then I knew I had to get her to consider rushing because she was exactly what our club needed. Before I knew it- there she was, rushing up the Stag hill on that cold and early morning in January. I was so happy that she felt the same way about XAN as I and so many others did and I was so excited to see where she would take our club.

A few weeks into pledging I got the wonderful opportunity to have her as my little. I was so excited and so happy that this sweet young woman wanted me, out of everyone, to be her big. Every time I saw Jenna, she was smiling (even in the black pleather pants J). She always had a way of making my days better whether it was by giving hugs, writing me notes, sending me texts, or doing one of the many other little things she did. That was the thing about Jenna. She lived for the little things. She lived to make someone’s day better each and every day.

As her summer was ending and her sophomore year was about to begin, Jenna informed us that she was not going to be able to come back because of personal reasons. I found myself very upset because as fast as she had come into my life, just as fast I felt she was leaving it. Jenna assured me that we would keep in contact and we would not lose touch; Jenna did just that. Our bond continued to get stronger and stronger, and it was not long before I wondered how I ever survived without this amazing young woman in my life! She made me and every other girl in Kianu a priority in her life. I can recall times where she sent Christmas cards to the Kianu house and wrote letters to the pledges without ever meeting them before. It honestly left me speechless. I have never ever met someone as thoughtful and genuine as Jenna.

I got to enjoy my senior year with my little in more ways than I could have ever imagined. I will never be able to thank her enough for that. From jamming out to “Party in the USA” at Formal and Kummoniwannalaya, Dinner and movie dates, meeting up at a Red’s game, to talking and texting endlessly on the phone every week. Jenna never forgot about me. Jenna was never too busy for her “BIG LICK” while she was at home.

When I think of Jenna, I think of a true friend. I think of a million memories that I will always cherish of her and I together. I think of a courageous young woman that never let her condition get the best of her, but she let it challenge and inspire her. I can honestly say that Jenna lived her life to the fullest and did not leave this world with any regrets. She was the most amazing person that I have ever met and has forever made a mark on my life.

I know Jenna is looking down on us, still smiling and wanting us to embrace this life just as she did. With that being said, be sure to hold those close to you closer. Don’t try to explain the unexplainable, love entirely and be thankful for everything, everyday.

Just like Jenna- Never forget to Live ♥ Laugh ♥ Love

Love in XAN and especially mine,
Kristen Lichtenauer
(Also known as BIG LICK J)
