Girl with the Arrow

Dan Blickensderfer (September 2004)
Brother of a Kianu

Nomination:

This month, I would like to depart from convention and nominate a "Guy with the Arrow" instead of the normal "Girl with the Arrow". Chi Alpha Nu is successful for many reasons, and one of these reasons is the volunteers who donate countless hours to make sure that everything from founding anniversary celebrations to tax filings are taken care of. Most of these volunteers are Kianus, actives and alums, but oftentimes these volunteers are relatives or friends of Kianus. For example, if you look at the house clean-up that takes place every year, there are always Kianu fathers, mothers and husbands participating. We are very grateful for all of these people, both for supporting us personally, and for their support of our club.

One of our amazing volunteers is actually the brother of a Kianu. I first heard of Dan Blickensderfer at an alumnae meeting in 2001. We were discussing the need for a new website that we could have complete control over. Leigh Ann Blickensderfer McCray '91 told us that her brother ran a web hosting service, and that if we went through him, we could have our own domain name for a nominal yearly fee. We were delighted when we got our own domain name, and I started working on the site. I had the ability to make web pages, but not to create a guestbook. Initially, we signed up for one of those free guestbooks that have all the ads all over them. Not ideal, but it was better than nothing. I was pleasantly surprised when Dan told me that he could create a guestbook for us. That was just the beginning. About a year later, the idea of a central database was discussed. Ideally, it would would combine our treasurer's database, our secretary's database, and serve as a tool for all Kianus. Dan created something better than any of us expected with countless hours of his own time. This online database allows Kianus to log in and perform many functions such as: check dues status, look up fellow Kianus, read restricted information, and select which information should be available to the general public on our website. It also allows alumnae officers to look up addresses of Kianus by county, zip code, class year, state, etc. in order to send out mailings to target groups for alumnae gatherings. This has made the job of the Alumnae Outreach officers much easier.

After Dan had been hosting our website for a year or so, our Alumnae Treasurer discovered that we had not received a bill from him for his services. She asked him about it and he said that he had decided not to send us a bill. She had to force him to take payment from us, an amount that does not even begin to cover the time he has devoted to us. Whenever I run into a problem with the website, I send Dan an email and he always has the problem solved in a short amount of time.

We are thankful for all our volunteers, and especially Dan Blickensderfer. Thanks Dan!
